Paying with Clipper
VTA accepts the following on a Clipper card:
Cash value: For single rides on local or express bus routes or on light rail.
VTA Standard Monthly Pass: Unlimited rides for one calendar month for adults on local bus routes and light rail and for youth, senior and disabled riders on any route. Available for sale on the 16th of the prior month through the 15th of the month.
VTA Adult Express Monthly Pass: Unlimited rides on local and express buses and light rail for one calendar month. Available for sale on the 16th of the prior month through the 15th of the month.
Caltrain Monthly Pass: Unlimited rides for one calendar month for adults on local buses and light rail and for youth, senior and disabled riders on any route. Caltrain monthly passes are available for sale from the 21st of the prior month through the 15th of the month.
You can earn free rides on VTA:
Adults who spend $7.50 in cash value on local bus and light rail routes earn a standard day pass—free rides on local bus routes and light rail for the rest of the day.
Adults who spend $15 in cash value on express bus routes earn an express day pass—free rides on all VTA service for the rest of the day.
Senior and disabled riders who spend $3 in cash value on any route earn free rides on all VTA service for the rest of the day.
Youth riders who spend $3.75 in cash value on any route earn free rides on all VTA service for the rest of the day.
Within the 2-hour transfer window, adult riders who have earned a standard day pass and transfer to an express bus route will be charged an upgrade fee. Outside the 2-hour window, adult riders will be charged the full express fare.
Upgrades: Adult standard monthly pass and Caltrain monthly pass customers can use cash value on Clipper to upgrade to an express bus.
Transferring with Clipper
Clipper knows when to give you free and discounted rides when you transfer.
- VTA transferring to VTA
- Free unlimited rides on local bus routes and light rail within 2 hours of boarding any VTA bus or light rail. Discounted ride on an express route within 2 hours of boarding a local VTA bus.
- AC Transit transferring to VTA
- Adults get a free ride on a local bus or light rail or discounted ride on an express bus within 2 hours of boarding AC Transit. Youth, senior and disabled riders get free rides on all VTA service within 2 hours of boarding AC Transit.
- BART transferring to VTA
- Discounted ride within 1 hour of exiting BART.
- Dumbarton Express transferring to VTA
- Adults get a free ride on a local bus or light rail or discounted ride on an express bus within 2 hours of boarding Dumbarton Express. Youth, senior and disabled riders get free rides on all VTA service within 2 hours of boarding Dumbarton Express.
- SamTrans transferring to VTA
- Adults get a free ride on a local bus or light rail or discounted ride on an express bus within 2 hours of boarding SamTrans when using a monthly pass. Youth, senior and disabled riders get free rides on all VTA service within 2 hours of boarding SamTrans when using a SamTrans monthly pass.
